The most effective fishermen vary their bait depending on the fish they aim to catch. They know that bass, for example, go after earthworms. Carp love corn. Crappie respond well to rubber lures. Fishermen also adjust their technique depending on the time of day, the water conditions, and the season. They soak up as much information as possible about the fish and it’s environment, ultimately using their learnings to attract and, hopefully, hook.
Do what Chuck Holmes suggests: write copy. Re-write the ads you come across in your life. Ask yourself “why did the copywriter take that approach? Why use that particular word? Why focus on that aspect?” Ruin your TV watching by studying the commercials. And give yourself some really challenging assignments, like writing copy for a car, for pharmaceutical, for a fashion line. Can you think in terms of imagery as well? The distinction you made between the two jobs is spot-on. I worked as a copywriter in various ad agencies, crafting TV, print and radio ads (this was pre-internet), before branching into content writing. Knowing the rigors of both jobs, I must say I have the utmost respect for what each kind of writer does. It might benefit your readers to know though that – as a content writer – I’m also increasingly being expected to write award applications, press releases, even speeches. In this profession, the more flexible one is, the more employable he/she is.
