The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that writers in general earned a mean yearly salary of $73,090 as of May 2018. However, there was a wide variance in wages among writers. The bottom ten percent of professionals took in $31,700 or less each year, while the top ten percent of these workers made $121,670 or more annually. Search engine optimization (SEO) is all about improving your content to get better Google search engine rankings. Without excellent content, your site won’t appear in the top search engine results. That’ll make it harder for visitors and potential customers to find your site when they search. Good content is optimized both for search engines and human beings. When you use the right keyword phrases in the right place, your content will appear in the searches it’s most relevant to.
Content marketing is a quickly growing field. With that growth comes opportunities for entrepreneurial-minded writers. If you're curious about getting started in content marketing, we've put together a guide that should tell you if you are cut out for the job -- and if you need content writers for your next project. Find out as we discuss content marketing 101.
So, whenever someone asks me what I do, I reply that I’m a content writer. Quite often, they aren’t sure what that means, and for good reason. It’s not the most descriptive job title in the world, but that’s because content writing has to remain as open and flexible as it can; content writers wear a lot of hats. Ask 10 different content writers what they do during the day, and you’ll most likely get 10 different answers. The truth is the job of a content writer is about much more than just churning out articles or blog posts. Let’s take a moment to break down the job of the content writer, and see if we can develop a more thorough understanding of just what we content writers do – and why you probably need one.
If you get stuck trying to come up with a catchy headline and have no clue what wording to choose, why not make the most of the headline generators? In spite of generating rather simplistic ideas at times, they can inspire you to change the way you intended to deliver your ideas at first. To create a topic, enter any word related to your future blog post into the search field and voila! You can update the search results as many times as needed until the topic is a perfect match for you.
Low pay. Most content writing positions do not pay well, especially entry level writing positions. Small newspapers or publications are often good places to start in terms of gaining experience and contacts. But often, the compensation will be $10-$12 an hour. The average salary for content writers in the United States is $40,000 a year. Higher paying positions in the content writing field include project managers, online researchers, and proposal writers. However, you will need higher levels of experience to qualify for these positions.
I mostly worry about the length of the original source. If I quoted 100 words from a 250-word blog, I think that would be too much. A lawyer would have the best advice, but I would limit the quote to 25 words in that case. Books are a little easier. If you quote 300 words from a 150-page book, I believe you would be fine. Poems and song lyrics are a danger zone because they’re often short. I’ve cited as little as possible from them. It’s always best to get legal counsel before publishing the final content.
A great job description starts with a compelling summary of the position and its role within your company. Your summary should provide an overview of your company and expectations for the position. Outline the types of activities and responsibilities required for the job so job seekers can determine if they are qualified, or if the job is a good fit.
Customize your resume and cover letter. If you decide to go a more traditional route and apply for a permanent content writing position at a writing based agency or organization, you will need to customize your resume and cover letter to fit the position. This will show your employer that you noted the skills outlined in the job posting and that you can fulfill the expectations of the position.

Make sure someone else checks for errors Consider asking several people to look over the publication. You need impartial help of two kinds. First, ask someone who is similar to your target audience to review your work and tell you whether the message is coming across clearly. Are they hooked? Does it leave them with unanswered questions? Second, ask someone to proofread for you. Misspellings, typos, and poor grammar reflect poorly on your business.

My name is Laci and I am super passionate about anything that allows me to be creative! I first fell in love with graphic design when I was 15 years old. In Junior high I was a part of the student run yearbook staff and learned Adobe Pagemaker. In using that program, I learned about other design programs made by Adobe. A few years later I enrolled in elective courses for graphic and web design. In these courses, I learned the basics of Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and basic HTML. Beyond these courses, I have no formal education and have built upon my skills through experience, online tutorials and a desperate...
