There are several ways to assess website content quality. If content appears in search engines and people who find it stick around to read it, the content is well optimized, and relevant and useful to visitors. Quality content uses proper spelling and grammar, and links to authoritative external sources. You can also assess the quality of your content by checking analytics data. Do what Chuck Holmes suggests: write copy. Re-write the ads you come across in your life. Ask yourself “why did the copywriter take that approach? Why use that particular word? Why focus on that aspect?” Ruin your TV watching by studying the commercials. And give yourself some really challenging assignments, like writing copy for a car, for pharmaceutical, for a fashion line. Can you think in terms of imagery as well? How do images and words go together? Sound and music? Put yourself in the place of the intended audience for the ads you encounter, and the ones you practice on. Get a feel fo...

I’ve never written a cold email to potential clients (it is a valid tactic, and many copywriters use cold emailing to find clients). I got all my first clients through guest posting. I wasn’t planning to be a copywriter and I didn’t feel ready for it either, but as I was blogging about what I was learning about writing, people asked whether I’d write for them. (If you’re interested, you can read the story of how I got started here: https://smartblogger.com/online-career).
I think that award applications, press releases and speeches is something that’s become common for a content executive as content is seen as a broad skill and so can be applied to many areas of writing. Though if this is something you’re not comfortable with, then perhaps raise it with your line manager or look at ways to improve on these development areas.

I have a quick question though. Do you know of any copywriting courses that can help me copywrite in English for an audience that has English as their second language? It is a tricky one as obviously not only the audience´s level of English but also their culture and their mother tongue would dramatically influence their interpretation of the copy.
While a lawyer would have the best advice, I have my own general parameters. For example, quoting 150 words from a 300-word article would be too much. In that case, I would limit my use to 25 words. I would be fine quoting 250 words from a 175-page book. I cite poems and song lyrics as little as possible because they’re often short. You should have legal counsel from your fair-use parameters.
Thanks for this post. It verified what I thought was true. I was recently employed and given the role of content executive. My manager asks me to write product copy on a daily bases which I’m really not confident doing. I can write long blog posts without any issues but writing short one liners gives me anxiety. I don’t know if I should admit this or not…. They also think SEO is simple copy.
Think about your long-term goals.  Companies like to hire people who are goal-oriented or those that already have an idea of what direction they want to take in their lives. It gives them the certainty, which is essential in executing the plans and goals of the organization. Also, if you think you love writing that much to make it your long-term career, then be ready to explain your reasons including the specific fields you would like to specialize in.
